Girl sponsored by Fort Massey Sunday School
The Sunday School and congregation of Fort Massey United Church is raising money for a scholarship fund to sponsor a child, Shivani Mahesh, to attend the Ratlam Christian Mission School, in Ratlam, M.P., India. The cost for one year's education is approximately $435 (despite the Dr. Mina MacKenzie Memorial Trust Fund Newsletter stating a cost of $375), which includes room and board, tuition, school uniform, and materials and is awarded to a child
from a family with an income less than $40/month. Shivani is shown in the photo on the left. She comes from Fitera Village in Dhar District southwest of Ratlam has been supported by Fort Massey Sunday School and congregation since July 2012 to receive this aid. She and her family are Hindu and of the Bhil/Adivasi tribal people (aboriginal people of Central India) and of the lowest caste. She has successfully completed the fourth grade in April 2016. The area around Ratlam is semi-desert and the hot season of late April to the end of June is when the school break takes place. Her father, Mahesh, is a farm labourer (and has been suffering from mental health issues for which he has received some treatment in a hospital in the city of Indore) and her mother, Shaida, is not well. She has a little brother named Virendra and a little sister named Khushee. They live in a hut they own, which has no water or electricity. $475 has been sent to fund her education for the school year or July 2016 to April 2017 and to provide a little extra at Christmas. If you would like to contribute to this fund, you can put your free-will donation on the offering plate or in an envelope marked as being for Shivani's education, at the front of the church sanctuary, before or after Sunday services. Simply write Shivani or Ratlam on the envelope.
